You cannot start up nor maintain a chicken farm or a chicken farming business without these dire necessities.

(1) You will need buildings to raise your chickens in, whether they are barns or hutches depending on how you are want to raise your chickens: conventional or free-range?
(2) You will need feeding supplies to feed your chickens properly to enable them to grow better and increase productivity.

The first most important thing to do is to check the zoning laws and local restrictions as regards raising chickens in your area. Chickens are not always legal to own depending on where you live. They may be considered a noise nuisance and you may end up being fined severely for it.

Decide what sectors of the poultry industry you wish to pursue. In the chicken industry, there are two main sectors: Layers, which are chickens bred and raised to produce eggs, or broilers, chickens raised and bred to be slaughtered. This is one of the most important things to draw up as part of your operation.

A proper feasibility study is very vital for the success of this business, you have to start by choosing proper breeds according to your desired production. Visit your nearest local market and try to understand which product has a huge demand and price.

Items to consider are as follows: Where will you get your feed and not just a bag at a time, but bulk delivery? If you are raising meat birds, where will you have them processed? Is there a processing plant that does custom processing near your property? Of course, you can process your own birds and if you and your family members do all the work.

Initial stocking is also one of the most important factors for start-ups, the stock should only be purchased from a reliable hatchery or franchised dealer where the parent stocks are well-housed and well-managed. Chicks should be free from diseases and deformities. For broilers, choose those that have high livability and fast growers. For layers, choose those that have good egg size, high egg production and long, productive life.

To consider making profits, you would also have to procure a large number of chickens that must be more than hundreds.
If you want to go for more intensive or commercial poultry farming, you may consider applying for a loan through banks or by contacting any of your nearest agricultural officer for assistance.

Marketing is also the most important factor you should consider. You do this effectively by making yourself known to potential customers and consumers. Advertise yourself by simply letting other people know you have eggs or meat you want to sell. Often selling by word-of-mouth is a lot cheaper and still the most popular means of advertising. Raise your animals in accordance with local, state and federal law in Nigeria.

While many intensive operations concentrate on just one or two breeds of bird, for the enthusiast there are a wide number of the broiler, birds raised for meat and egg-laying breeds available. The duration of broiler rearing is getting shorter by one day every year. The consumer is looking at the quality of the reared broiler. They are looking at the health of the bird and other attributes like dressing percentage and muscle growth. Poultry farming is such a business in Nigeria that can never dry up.
